Greek sisyrinchion – a name given to Gynandriris sisyrinchium in classical times.
Annual or perennial herbs with rhizomes. Leaves erect, flat, without midvein. Flowers radially symmetrical, stalked in cymes within a pair of unequal green spathes. Perianth segments equal, free, but forming a cup around style. Stamen filaments fused. Style branches 3, entire, thread-like, shorter than stamens. Capsules globular, on slender stalks.
About 100 species in N and S America, but exact number uncertain as the genus needs revision.
