Greek photos — light, referring to the shiny leaf surfaces of some species.
Evergreen or deciduous trees or shrubs. Leaves simple, alternate, short-stalked, usually finely toothed, rarely entire; stipules sometimes leaf-like. Flowers in terminal clusters, white. Styles 2-5, joined at the base. Sepals persisting on the fruit. Stamens 15-25. Ovary half-inferior, with 2-5 chambers. Fruit small, berry-like, with 1-4 seeds.
50-60 species from S and E Asia.
Seed or semi-hardwood cuttings.
Fruit a small pome with the sepals persisting on the fruit.
