Photinia ×fraseri Dress

Large evergreen shrub or small tree to 5 m tall. Leaves elliptic to obovate, finely toothed, 7-9 cm long, glossy above, base tapering. Leaf stalk to 5 cm long. Flower clusters 10-12 cm wide. Flowers white, 6-8 mm wide, petals hairy on the inside at the base; summer.

This is a hybrid, P. glabra × P. serratifolia.

A 'Allyn Sprite' PVJ 9(3)73 is a relatively recent release, as is A 'Superhedge' PVJ 11(1)64. ['Paradise Burgundy'].

Garden origin.

Dress (1961). The parentage of cultivars listed under P ×fraseri requires further study.

P. serratifolia (Desf.) Kalkman, Chinese Hawthorn, from China is a large shrub or small tree to 10 m or more tall with new growth tinged red. Leaves oblong or oblanceolate, 10-18 cm long, leathery, base rounded, glossy above, margins toothed. Leaf stalks 2-4 cm long. Flower clusters 10-18 cm wide. Flowers white, petals without any hair. Fruits red, more or less round. Syn. P. serrulata Lindl. True P. serratifolia has hairless petals. Plants grown in SE Australia as P. serratifolia (often as a substantial hedge plant or small specimen tree) have petals that are distinctly hairy at the base, indicating probable hybridisation. Although P. ×fraseri would appear to be the likely hybrid, the leaves of plants examined are generally much larger than those of this hybrid and much closer in appearance to P. serratifolia as described here.

VIC: Buninyong (Bot. Gds); Melbourne (Royal Bot. Gds).
