Latin tigris – tiger.

Perennial herbs with bulb. Leaves basal, pleated. Spathes green, containing 2-5 flowers each lasting one day. Perianth segments free, with broad claws forming a cup; the inner shorter, with nectaries. Stamens joined in a tube around style. Style branches alternating with stamens, slender, cylindrical, each forked into two.

35 species in S America to Mexico.

Leaves pleated; flowers large, cup-shaped, usually spotted.
