Name published as a substitute (neo) for the illegitimate name Marica (Ker Gawl.) Herbert

Perennial herbs with short rhizomes. Leaves flat, sword-shaped, in a basal fan. Stem erect with one stem leaf. Flowers in cymes of 2-4 on flat winged stalks, each lasting 1 day. Perianth segments free, with claws forming an open cup marked with dark lines; outer spreading; inner smaller, erect, curved back and bearing nectaries. Stamens free, filaments capillary; anthers short, appressed to style branches. Style branches 3, opposite stamens, thickened, erect, flat, with short bilobed crests.

12 species in Mexico and S America.

Division or viviparous seedlings.

Iris-like flowers with short, recurved inner segments marked with dark lines.
