Leaves prominently veined, 60 cm long, 5 cm wide. Stem flattened, overtopping flowers and producing small plants at tip. Flowers few, 8-11 cm wide. Outer perianth segments cream-white, with brown banded claws. Inner segments coarsely banded yellow and violet; autumn.

N. gracilis (Herb.) Sprague, Apostle Plant, from S Mexico to Brazil has leaves prominently veined, 40-80 cm long, 20-25 mm wide. Stem flattened, to 1 m long, arching. Flowers 2-5, 4-5 cm wide, outer perianth segments oblong, inrolled, white to cream with yellow and brown banded claws. Inner segments bright blue, coarsely marked with brown; autumn.
