Molinia Schrank

Commemorating J.I. Molina (1740–1829) author of Chilean natural history books.

Tufted perennial grass with persistent swollen lower internodes. Leaves mostly basal, narrow, flat, rolled in bud. Ligules hairy. Inflorescence a narrow panicle. Spikelets laterally flattened, each with 1-4 florets. Glumes 2, lower glume 1-3 nerved, upper glume 1-5 nerved. Lemmas firmer than the glumes, 3(-5) nerved. Palea 2-nerved.

Closely related to the genus Eragrostis. Grown for the highly ornamental blue foliage of M. caerulea.

Seed and division.

Tussock-forming grass with mostly narrow branched purplish spikes.

2-5 species from Europe and northern and south-western Asia.
