Feather Speargrass

Tufted perennial to about 1 m tall with short rhizomes and no basal tuft of leaves. Leaf blade rolled in bud. Ligule membranous, up to 2 mm in length. Leaf blade tightly rolled, 1.5-2 mm wide. Sheath brown in colour, inner sheath white. Inflorescence triangular in outline, 15-25 cm long with whorls of few-flowered open, decoratively feathery branches. Spikelets about 1 cm long; awn strongly bent once or occasionally with a second weak bend.

Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales

 

A. ramosissima and A. verticillata are also sometimes grown, and A. scabra subsp. scabra, Rough Speargrass, is found in pasture.
