Trunk usually subterranean. Leaves to about 1 m long, dark green or bluish-green, 4-10 in a sparse crown, usually erect, about 1 m across, divided for most of their length. Leaflets 16-40, entire or shortly lobed, stiff and 1-ribbed. Panicles erect, much longer than the leaves. Fruit round, about 1 cm across, glossy black, about 1 cm wide. Widely distributed in SE USA, occurring in floodplains, streambanks and swamps. Plants from the western end of their range often develop trunks to 2 m tall.
Commonly grown.
