Hippeastrum hybrids

Although species are occasionally sold and sought out by collectors, most Hippeastrums available in horticulture are hybrids with large, showy flowers that are popular with florists. The hybrid background is complicated, involving several American species, although most are derived from H. vittatum. Cultivars exhibit a range of vivid colours, the flowers often being striped or mottled. For collectors the species display a simple elegance. Flowers are produced in winter and spring.
