Stem 40-90 cm tall with 1-2 branches. Leaves 4-8, to 50 cm long, 3-6 mm wide. Flowers 5-16 in a loose 1 sided spike, late spring. Perianth cream to salmon, shaded dull pink; tube 5-7 cm long, segments oblong, 20-24 mm long. Anthers purple, in mouth of tube. Syn. I. longiflora Berger.; Morphixia paniculata (Delaroche) Baker.

I. viridiflora Lam., Green Ixia, from S Africa has a stem 50 to 80 cm tall, branched. Leaves 5-7, 3-5 mm wide. Flowers 18-30 in a dense narrow spike, opening fully only in sunlight. Spathe 8-10 mm long, translucent. Perianth pale blue-green with dark violet centre; tube 5-8 mm long; segments elliptic, acute, 15-25 mm long; late spring. 'Amethystina' Flowers pale blue with violet centres.
Many hybrid Ixia cultivars were produced in the pas, a few of those cultivated today are listed.
