Rhinerrhiza Rupp

Greek rhinein – to file, rasp; rhiza – root; an allusion to the rough rasp-like roots.

Epiphytic or rarely epilithic herbs, monopodial. Stems erect to pendent, simple, lacking pseudobulbs, roots rough or smooth, creeping. Leaves in 2 ranks, oblong, leathery, sheathing at base. Inflorescences axillary racemes, pendent or arching. Flowers resupinate, many, crowded, short-lived, yellowish with reddish or brownish blotches. Sepals and petals similar, free, broad or narrow, not widely spreading. Labellum 3-lobed, side lobes surrounding column, midlobe forming a short hollow chin-like spur. Column short, with a foot of about the same length. Pollinia 4, waxy.

5 species from Australia, New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.

Medium sized epiphyte with many yellow and brown flowers that open simultaneously and last only one or two days; roots rough.
