Annual herb to 30 cm tall, sparsely hairy. Stems ascending, simple or sparsely branched. Leaves oblanceolate, to 10 cm long, to 3 cm wide, margins toothed, rarely divided, sessile. Capitula solitary, to 8 cm across; winter to spring. Ray florets golden yellow, base and apex deep violet. Disk florets yellow, purple-tipped. Outer achenes 4-5 mm long, warty. Inner achenes 6-7 mm long, winged.
