Shrub to 2.5 m tall. Leaves to about 10 cm long, 5 cm wide, elliptic to oblong or ovate, 8-10-veined, base cordate. Flowers in few-flowered clusters, with the flower tubes 2.5-3.5 cm long, mostly pink, yellow, orange or red.

I. chinensis from China and Taiwan needs revision but is available and has, among others, the listed cultivars 'Alba' and 'Rosea'. This species has leaves to about 6 cm long with tapered bases and flowers in dense clusters. I. klanderiana and I. williamsii are also listed.
