Dalmatian Bellflower

Tufted, spreading to upright perennial herb to about 20 cm tall. Leaves cordate, roundish, toothed and stalked, the upper leaves smaller and stalkless. Flowers in branched clusters, funnel- to bell-shaped, the lobes bent back, lavender; summer. [C. muralis Portenschlag.]

C. isophylla Moretti, Italian Bellflower (Star of Bethlehem), is a smaller neat trailing plant to about 15 cm high with flowers 1.5-2 cm long, blue, violet or white. 'Alba' has flowers large and white.

C. poscharskyana Degen. from N Yugoslavia is similar, but has flowers wheel- to funnel-shaped and lobed for a quarter to a half of their length, whereas C. portenschlagiana has flowers funnel- to bell-shaped, lobed for only a quarter of their length. 'E.H. Frost' has creamy white, starry flowers while 'Liddusgan' has lavender pink flowers.

C. punctata Lam. from Japan is a rough, nettle-leaved perennial with pink flowers with dark mottling inside.
