Toona (Endl.) M.J.

Roem.

Derived from toon, an Indian name.

Deciduous or semi-deciduous trees. Bark unpleasant-smelling when damaged. Leaves alternate, compound and without a terminal leaflet. Flowers unisexual in terminal pendulous clusters. Sepals free or 4-5-lobed. Petals 5, united to form a stalk-like base. Stamens 5, attached to a disk. Ovary of 5 chambers. Fruit a 5-valved capsule; seeds winged.

T. sinensis (Juss.) M.J. Roem., a deciduous tree from China to Malaysia is occasionally grown for the spectacular delicate pink new foliage. These trees have a formal upright habit and can be coppiced to produce attractive stands of new plants. It appears that natural plants do not have the pronounced pink growth seen in cultivated plants. Specimens with this character are best referred to the cultivar 'Flamingo'. [Cedrela sinensis Juss.]

T. ciliata, Red Cedar is the source of a quality red timber.

Leaves pinnate; stamen filaments free.
