Variable prostrate or erect shrub to about 0.5 m tall. Leaves linear to narrowly ovate, to 4 cm long, 0.5 cm wide, rigid, 3-5-veined below, stalkless. Flowers with corolla white, pink or lilac; more or less year round, mainly spring and early summer.

This variable species is represented in horticulture by a range of forms and flower colours, notably a prostrate, white-flowered form listed as H. 'Alba'.
