Upright, spineless shrub to 2 m tall. Leaves with 3-5 large-toothed lobes, rather maple-like. Flower clusters pendent, of 5-10 flowers. Flowers yellow, with a tube to about 1.5 cm long, the sepal lobes to half the length of the tube and rolled back; fragrant; late spring to early summer. Fruit round, black, about 1 cm wide.
R. aureum Pursh, Golden Currant, from California and Mexico has similar yellow flowers, sometimes flushed with red, and is occasionally confused with the above. It has less hairy young shoots and sepals more than half as long as the flower tube.
