Densely branched upright, spineless shrub to 2 m tall. Leaves produced relatively early, roundish, with 3 or occasionally 5 toothed lobes, downy above, hairless below. Flower clusters erect, either all male or all female (unlike the other species which are bisexual), the female clusters much shorter than the males and with 10-15 (not 20-30) flowers; late spring to early summer. Flowers greenish yellow, the petals longer than the sepals. Fruit scarlet with a powdery bloom.
N Europe to Siberia.
