Greek aryter — cup, referring to the cup-like fruit valves of some species.
Trees. New growth hairy. Leaves alternate, evenly pinnate. Leaflets opposite or alternate; margins entire. Flower clusters mostly axillary. Flowers unisexual but sexes on the same tree. Calyx cup-like, deeply 5-lobed. Petals 5. Stamens 6-8 with hairy filaments. Floral disk present. Ovary with 2-3 chambers, often lobed, 2-valved, dehiscent. Fruit with 0 or 1-3 lobes, 2-valved, dehiscent.

25 species from Indomalesia to E Australia (8 species endemic).
Fresh seed.
Leaflets with strongly arched lateral nerves, fine cross veinlets and small domatia; fruit dehiscent, mostly 1-3-lobed, the aril enclosing the seed.
