Greek xanthos — yellow, stemon — stamen.
Trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate or opposite. Flowers in dense terminal or axillary clusters, or solitary. Sepals 4-5, often unequal. Petals 4-5. Stamens numerous, free, much longer than the petals. Ovary with 2-6 chambers. Fruit a capsule.
Often grown in warmer districts as a street tree for the neat habit and attractive, generally yellow flowers.
About 45 species from SE Asia to New Caledonia and N Australia (13 species).
