The native Chilean name uñi.
Evergreen shrubs. Leaves opposite, elliptic to lanceolate, leathery. Flowers solitary, nodding over. Calyx with 5 lobes. Petals 5. Stamens numerous, not longer than the petals. Ovary usually of 3 chambers. Fruit a fleshy berry.
Grown for the attractive foliage, white flowers and edible ornamental fruit.
5-15 species from tropical and warm areas of America.
Seed and cuttings.
U. molinae has fleshy dark brown or blue-black berries used in jams.
Flowers nodding, often pinkish at first; stamens mostly shorter than the petals, cf. Luma and Myrtus.
