Rosa rugosa Thunb.

Japanese Rose

Thick-stemmed shrub to about 2 m tall. Prickles dense, unequal and mixed, with bristles. Leaflets 5-9, more or less elliptic, hairless and wrinkled above, downy below, teeth simple. Flowers 1 or few, single, purplish pink; summer to autumn. Styles free, not protruding. Fruit 2 cm or so wide, roundish to pear-shaped, reddish to orange, hairless.
