A group of complex hybrids, mostly open shrubs to 2 m tall. Prickles a mix of welldispersed, small, straight prickles and a few large, hooked ones. Leaflets 5-7, ovate to almost round, dull above and downy below, marginal teeth simple; stipules narrow. Flowers forming a ball, 6-8 cm wide, double, pink, rarely white or dark red, fragrant; summer. Styles free, not protruding. Fruit spherical to ellipsoid, red.
In the 19th century crosses probably occurred with R. gallica-based plants and cultivars therefore display some resemblance to the Gallicas.

Shrub 1-2 m tall. Flowers cupped, pale pink deepening towards the centre, the outer petals reflexed with age, scented. Origin unknown, the name commemorating a French artist.

An arching bush to 2 m or so tall. Flowers large, loosely double, deep magenta inside, paler at the edge, stamens generally visible. A Gallica/China hybrid raised by Soupert and Notting, Luxembourg, 1856.
