Prunus serrula Franch.

Smooth-barked Cherry

Deciduous tree to 10 m tall, with shiny reddish brown to copper-coloured bark and prominent horizontal lenticels. Leaves lanceolate, to 10 cm long, acuminate, margins serrate. Flowers white, solitary, in umbels of 2-3 or more, stalks up to 2.5 cm long. Fruit ovoid, deep red.

Often grown for the shiny deep reddish brown young bark revealed when strips of the older coppery bark peel off.
