Deciduous tree to 20 m tall. Leaves elliptic to obovate, toothed, acuminate, to 15 cm long, reddish when young. Flowers pink, 3.5-4 cm wide, each on a stalk about 25 mm long, usually 2 or 3 together in stalkless or short-stalked umbels. Fruit ovoid, about 8 mm long, dark red to blackish.
