Prunus ×domestica L.

European Plum

Deciduous tree to 8 m. Leaves ovate to obovate, toothed, dull green above, pubescent beneath, to 10 cm long. Flowers white, to 2 cm wide, on stalks about 1 cm long, 1-3 together. Fruit variable in size and shape. Probably a hybrid between p. spinosa and p. cerasifera.

These are the edible plums (including gages, prunes and many other kinds) grown at least since classical times for the fruits which, unlike apricots and peaches, are borne on long stalks like cherries (but with flattened, not round pips). Cultivars include 'Formosa', 'Burmosa', 'Santa Rosa' and the red-fleshed blood plums 'Satsuma' and 'Frontier'.
