Herbaceous perennial growing to about 1 m tall. Leaves with leaflets having 3-5 deep lobes, with white hair below; margins double-toothed. Flower clusters spreading, the petals white; summer. Carpels 5-8, united at the base, hairless. Sometimes confused with f. purpurea.
F. rubra (Hill) Robinson from E and C USA also has some of the leaflets lobed, but the flowers are pinkish to purplish red.
