Commemorating Peter Kalm (1715–99), a Swedish botanist, botanical collector and student of Linnaeus.

Erect evergreen shrubs. Leaves alternate, opposite or in whorls, simple, entire, leathery. Flowers mostly in lateral or terminal clusters. Corolla with 10 pouches containing the anthers. Ovary superior. Fruit a 5-chambered capsule.

The foliage is poisonous when eaten.

Plants best suited to cool conditions and not widely grown in Australia.

Seed, cultivars by semihardwood cuttings, layers and grafting.

Corolla with 10 pouches each containing 1 anther.
