Small shrub to 1 m or so tall. Leaves to about 1.5 cm long in groups of 4-6, hairy. Flowers red or occasionally pink to white, 2-3.5 cm long in tight clusters at the ends of the branches in late winter to early spring.

The best known and most widespread species in the genus in southern Africa. Selections have been made from this species.
