Commemorating J. Linder, Swedish physician (1678–1723).

Aromatic, deciduous shrubs or small trees. Leaves alternate to opposite, vein pairs 3-5. Flowers unisexual with sexes on separate plants, the clusters surrounded by 4 deciduous bracts. Perianth segments 0-6. Male flowers with 9-12 stamens, female with sterile stamens. Fruit a 1-seeded berry.

Seed, layers or softwood cuttings.

80-100 species from tropical and temperate Asia, Himalaya to Malaysia, China and Japan, also E North America (2) (1 species from Australia).
