Shrubs or annual herbs. Leaves alternate. Flowers solitary or in clusters, bisexual or female. Perianth segments 5, occasionally with wing or wart on the back when in fruit. Stamens 5. Stigmas 2-3.
About 90 species from Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.
