Dryopteris wallichiana (Spreng.) Hyl.

Rhizome large. Fronds arching, soft textured, the axis covered in dark brown to black scales. Blade to 1 m long, narrowly elliptic in outline with the tip long-pointed. Segments square-tipped, cut almost to the midrib of branches and with prominent dark veins. Sori round, midway between midrib and margin. Needs shelter and warmth.

Recognition: Large cycad-like fern with a short trunk; fronds twice divided; segments abruptly terminated to form squarish ends.

India, Africa, S & C America, China, Japan.
