Cultivated Origin
This is a cultigen that has been considerably altered by human selection over many thousands of years. It is believed that the wild H. vulgare L. subsp. spontaneum (K. Koch) Körn. which was cultivated over 10 000 years ago gave rise to the form with a 2-rowed spike, subsp. distichon (L.) Körn., which then produced the 4- and 6-rowed forms of subsp. vulgare. This subspecies occurs in the wild where seed is dropped but rarely persists.
