Polystichum aculeatum (L.) Schott

Fronds divided twice. Blades to 60 cm long, more or less narrowly ovate to oblong in outline; side branches extending almost to the base of the frond. Ultimate segments leathery, prickly, glossy, dark green. Stalk extremely short. Can grow in cool areas.

Although available in the nursery trade this name has been mistakenly applied to P. formosum which differs in having broad-based almost triangular fronds with long stalks.

Recognition: Narrow, oblong prickly fronds with short stalks.

Temperate Europe and Asia.
