Rhizome spreading underground, covered with dark, spreading scales, especially at the base. Fronds to 70 cm or so long, divided 3 times; blade broadly triangular in outline, leathery, prickly and glossy, dark green; midrib scaly. Stalks about half the length of the blade, covered with brown scales. Ultimate segments with short stalks and sharply toothed margins. Can grow in cool areas.
Recognition: Long-creeeping rhizome; ultimate segments bristly pointed.
'Variegata' Segments banded whitish green. Origin unknown.
