Loosely turfed, spreading winter annual grass, which propagates by seed. Leaf rolled in bud. Ligule long (1-2 mm), membranous. Sheath smooth, rounded and often hairless. Inflorescence a narrow dense cylindrical spike-like panicle.
Europe
Used as a pasture grass when young but ripened seeds can cause serious stock losses.
Common weed of cultivated ground, pastures and waste areas; of little use for turf.
