Neoregelia carolinae (Beer) L.B.Sm.

Leaves in broadly spreading rosette 40-60 cm long, 2.5-3.5 cm wide, ligulate; sheaths large, broadly elliptic; outer leaves wholly green; inner ones at flowering with brilliant red bases; inflorescence deeply sunk in the centre of the rosette, many-flowered. Flowers to 4 cm long; flower stalks to 7 mm long; sepals green; petals dark blue.
