Cryptanthus bromelioides Otto & Dietr.

Rosette short stemmed to 30 cm high, stoloniferous. Leaves to 20 cm long, 4 cm wide, dull green to bronze, underside white scaled; margins wavy, densely toothed. Inflorescence many-flowered, compound. Flowers white.

Brazil

var. tricolor M.B. Foster Leaves with longitudinal bands of cream, white or green, flushed pink. More common in cultivation than the species.

 

C. sinuosus L.B. Sm. from Brazil has rosettes short stemmed, producing offshoots from the leaf axils on long stems. Leaves 10-30 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, dark green to brown; sparsely scaled above, heavily scaled below; margins wavy. Flowers white. Known in cultivation as C. 'Cascade' due to the large number of offshoots produced on long, trailing stems. Useful in hanging baskets.
