Small clustering palm. Trunk to 2 m tall, 30 cm wide, often remaining subterranean, much branched. Leaves fan-shaped, to 2.5 m long, the blades about 75 cm wide, erect to arching, green to waxy blue or silvery. Leaflets about 20, narrow, stiff, 1-nerved, 2-lobed, divided to the base. Leaf stalks slender, toothed. Flowers bisexual, creamy white. Panicles arising among the leaves and about as long as them, much branched. Fruit small, round to ellipsoid, black, 1 seeded.

Occurs naturally in coastal woodland and dunes, often in extensive colonies.
Usually grows where ground water is accessible. Somewhat cold sensitive, however will grow in warm temperate regions. Needs a sunny location.
