Stems and aerial branches absent. Leaves 2-6 per rosette, 12-120 cm long, 2.5-8 cm wide, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, erect, leathery, various banded with white, green, sometimes variegated.

West tropical Africa

There are numerous cultivars that differ in leaf shape, size, colour and variegation (Chahinian 1986). Specialist collections may have over 20 different cultivars of this species.

var. laurentii Leaves 30-120 cm long, with grey-green and silver, irregular, transverse banding, margin with wide yellow variegation.

var. trifasciata Leaves 30-120 cm long, with grey-green and silver, irregular, transverse banding, not variegated.

 

S. cylindrica Bojer from Angola has stems and aerial branches absent. Leaves 2-4 per rosette, 72-170 cm long, 2-3 cm thick at base, cylindrical, 2-ranked, stiffly erect, green-grey.

S. parva N.E. Br. from tropical East Africa has stems up to 12 cm long. Leaves 6-14 per rosette, 6-45 cm long, 0.8-2.5 cm wide, linear to lanceolate, erect to recurved, leathery, with transverse bands of light and dark green.
