Veltheimia capensis (L.) D C.

Perennial herb from an ovoid bulb with a flat base and thin scales. Leaves about 10, strap-shaped, waxy-green. Inflorescence to about 30 cm, waxy green, mottled purple. Flowers numerous, tubular, nodding; winter to early spring. Tepals to 30 mm long, white to pink or wine-red, sometimes red spotted or greenish lobed. Fruit inflated-ovate, 3-furrowed. V. bracteata Bak. From South Africa is a perennial herb from an ovoid bulb with fleshy scales. Leaves 8-12, strap-shaped, glossy. Inflorescence to about 45 cm, dark purple with yellow spots. Flowers numerous, tubular, nodding; winter to early spring. Tepals to 40 mm long, pink-purple, yellow spotted. Fruit narrow-ovate, 3-winged.
