Perennial herb to about 70 cm. Leaves several, basal, linear. Inflorescence manyflowered. Flowers open cup-shaped, erect to spreading; summer.Tepals to 45 mm long, lobes about 3 times the tube length, narrow, reddish-pink. Stamens and sterile stamens more or less equal; sterile stamens elongate, inrolled. Fruit many-seeded, dried floral tube splitting as fruit matures. Grown as a spring-flowering bulb ornamental on well-drained soil.

B. elegans Hoover, Elegant Brodiaea, from California to Oregon is a perennial herb to about 50 cm. Leaves several, basal, linear. Inflorescence many-flowered. Flowers open, cup-shaped, erect to spreading; summer.Tepals to 45 mm long, lobes less than 2.5 times the tube length, narrow, deep purple or reddish-purple. Stamens and sterile stamens more or less equal; sterile stamens flat-concave. Fruit manyseeded, dried floral tube not splitting as fruit matures.
