Nerine bowdenii Wats.

Bulb with a neck. Leaves to 20-30 cm long and 3 cm wide, blunt tipped. Flowers (4)8-12 per cluster, each flower with lobes 5-7.5 cm long and generally with the margins undulate towards the tip and crisped; autumn. Stamens and style bent downwards. Filaments without appendages at the base. Ovary hairless.

South Africa

The most widely cultivated species with several hybrids and a range of cultivars: it is variable in flower colour and size. Selection has been towards larger flowers in increased numbers per head producing a more rounded ball of flowers.

 

N. masonorum Bolus and N. flexuosa (Jacq.) A.D. Herb. are also occasionally available.
