Narcissus jonquilla L.

Jonquil

Bulb dark-coloured, 1-2.5 cm wide. Leaves to 45 cm long, narrow, erect, and rush-like, dark green, narrowly ridged on the outer face. Flowers 2-6, yellow, fragrant; winter to spring. Perianth tube about 2.5 cm long; corona wavy edged, same colour as perianth segments.

Southern Europe, Algeria

Sometimes grown commercially for the perfume.

 

N. assoanus Dufour from France and Spain is similar but has a perianth tube to 2 cm long, while that of N. jonquilla is mostly 2-3 cm long.

N. cordubensis Fern. Casas is a larger jonquilla with star-shaped flowers.

N. fernandesii Pedro is occasionally encountered.

N. ×intermedius Loisel. is a natural hybrid between N. jonquilla and N. tazetta.

N. rupicola Duf. is occasionally encountered

N. viridiflorus Schousb. from Spain and Morocco has green flowers that open in autumn.
