Narcissus poeticus L.

Poet's Narcissus

Bulb dark coloured, to 4 cm wide. Leaves to about 35 cm long and 1 cm wide, flat, waxy blue. Flowers mostly solitary, white, fragrant; spring to summer. Perianth tube 2.5 cm long, the short corona with a wavy red edge.

France to Greece and Russia

Flowers variable in size and position of the stamens.

The flowers were once used to make perfume.

var. ornatus Hort. Corona yellow, edged red. Early-flowering.

var. recurvus (Haw.) Bak. Leaves and perianth segments recurved.

 

N. ×medioluteus, is a natural hybrid between N. poeticus and N. tazetta and is very similar but with flowers in clusters of 2-3, sometimes found as a remnant in old gardens.

N. ×tenuior is a hybrid between N. jonquilla and N. poeticus and differs in having flattish leaves and a longer corona that is darker coloured than the lobes.
