Haemanthus coccineus L.

Leaves thick, to about 0.5 m long and 20 cm wide. Flower cluster of 25-100 flowers, to about 8 cm wide on a stalk to about 40 cm long appearing before the leaves; late summer to early autumn. Flowers pink to scarlet with erect to spreading lobes. Spathes 6-9, reddish. Stamens protruding from the flower. Fruit a white to pink berry.

H. albiflos Jacq. is occasionally grown; it has leaves that are present with the flowers which are white with green veins.
