Rosette evergreen herb with tuberous roots from short rhizomes. Inflorescence to 60 cm, branched, exceeding leaves; generally with plantlets at the nodes. Leaves broadly linear, stalked, often white-striped. Flowers numerous, star-like, 1.5-2 cm wide; summer. Tepals white.

Generally grown in full sun to deep moist shade or as an indoor or hanging basket subject. Normally only the variegated forms are cultivated. Differences between some of the following listed cultivars need close examination.
