Aquatic rhizomatous plants. Leaf blades floating or aerial, oblong-elliptic, to 25 cm long and 10 cm wide; stalks to 45 cm long. Spathe tubular, blade green and shed early; spring to summer. Spadix thin, yellow, to about 10 cm long on a stalk to 1 m long. Flowers bisexual. Perianth 4-6 parted. Ovary 1-chambered. Fruit a green berry embedded in the spadix, containing 1 seed.
