Herb to more than 50 cm tall with tubers roundish. Leaves ovate to elliptic, peltate, to 30 cm or more long and 15-25 cm wide; stalks variegated. Spathes to 10 cm long, the tube green outside, whitish-green inside, blade whitish; spring to autumn. Spadix with male zone 3-6 cm long. [c._hortulanum Birdsey]

An important indoor plant with numerous variegated cultivars (some with leaves virtually white) that has become naturalised in the tropics where it is known for its irritant sap.
